Baby boomers aren’t the only ones worried about aging brains. Cognitive impairment is also a significant concern among millenials and Generation Xers. New evidence suggests that healthy living may help preserve brain power. It wouldn’t hurt to try, right?

Consult with your doctor to determine if these simple steps to try at home might help you to retain YOUR brain power:

Diet Overhaul: Forgo the processed foods and replace them with more fruits and vegetables. Meals should emphasize lean protein, whole grains and are low in saturated fats.
Raise Your Heartrate: Try exercising at least 30 minutes 5 times weekly. Be creative with activities that your love. Target heart rates for exercise depend on your age and fitness level…check with your doctor!
Lift Weights: Using free weights or machines try to commit to 2-3 strength training sessions per week.
Train Your Brain!! Your short term memory is where you hold information in your mind long enough to use it. Stimulate your working memory by using exercises that test visual and audio memory, Dakim, Inc. has a training computer game called “Brain Fitness” (dakim.com) which improves brain function in older adults (according to a study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry in 2013). “Dual-n-Back” exercises involve a simultaneous test of visual and auditory memory, matching pictures and sounds (brainworkshop.source.forge.net).
